Octovo Solis light for Kindle 3

Octovo still don't have your Kindle 3 covers ready  even though you told me you will be available before the end of the year - I hope that in time for Christmas delivery.  In the meantime, their Solis light has been redesigned to fit the latest generation Kindle 6 inch eReader.

The Octovo Solis light is created from a single block of brushed aluminium.  The lighting arm accommodates a single LED bulb and fold down for storage. The light is powered by a single AA battery (included), about 25 hours between battery offer changes sollte.Der mount is designed to prevent the light at 15 degrees glare angle.

The design is somewhat similar the Kandle eReader light compared to the gooseneck style of Mighty Bright lights.I like better than the Kandle the Solis from several Gründen.Erstens it uses AA batteries  during the button Kandle batteries used harder to find and expensive.  The Solis is made from metal instead of plastic.

Finally, although the description of Kandle says that it is for the latest generation Kindle 3, it was originally made with a wider bezel (1 & 2 Kindle, Sony PRS-300 & PRS-600) for Ereaders. The bracket of Kandle wider than facing the Kindle 3 and if not careful I would be easy to mistakenly think bracket not gut.Ich there on the screen of the Kindle 3 that would be one Kandle, but I use it on my 3 Kindle eReader, because I am afraid I could forget and do this.

The Solis light is available from Amazon or directly from OCTOVO icon for $29.99.OCTOVO Solis eReader makes light in a size of the Kindle 2 and the nook eBook reader.

Top ten links week 44: echo chamber, enthusiasm gap, broadband, learn, being famous and more

1. Great post! RT @ValentineLuLu: Blogged: The enthusiasm gap and transliteracy #intlib10 I met Jamie at Internet Librarian, I really wish we’d had more time to talk, I’m impressed with her work. Jamie has some good suggestions for bridging the enthusiasm gap  and I love her approach – focus on the people, the need, not the tools

When discussing and marketing tech training stop talking about the tools and start talking about the benefits. Don’t say “Learn to use Facebook” try “Tips and tools for keeping in touch with distant loved ones” and show them facebook, skype, IM, etc. Teach to the needs of our community members by letting tech play the role in was intended for: a tool”

2. The Social Physical Library: fostering connections & giving patrons a reason to come inside When Emily Lloyd isn’t drawing witty cartoon’s she’s writing thoughtful blog posts like this one. Seriously awesome idea, wish I had a prize to offer the first library that implements it,and shares how with the rest of us

One way libraries strive to build community is by offering programs–lectures, YouTube viewing nights, open mic poetry readings. Folks come together and hang out with their neighbors with similar interests (if only passively, while  listening to a lecture in the same room together). The thing with events, though, is that people have to a)hear about them, usually in advance b)remember to come to them (if they’re still in the mood), etc. They also c)usually require a significant amount of planning on the part of library staff, and perhaps even some money.

What if (in addition to these events) there were neat, social, community-building opportunities for patrons to engage in whenever they happened to step foot in the library? That didn’t require planning on the library’s part, or remembering on the patrons’ part? That were targeted to their own individual interests? That fostered connections between them and their neighbors? That made stopping by the library just to see what’s up in the building worthwhile, as opposed to only using the digital branch? That helped people to learn and to better use our resources and our spaces?

Here’s what I’m thinking: a living, updated-in-real-time site (somewhat like Twitter or Foursquare in the way it works–and it would need IM capabilities built-in), ideally displayed prominently on a large screen in the lobby/entrance, but workable even if it was just on the web via a link on the library’s home page (that automatically loads when you use the library computers, and that wireless users can choose to load).

3. Thoughtful piece looking at future and emergent technologies and their implications for learning and teaching

Rather than focus on technology alone, it is more useful to examine the possible social effects of technologies – the socio-technical trends.

4. great guide to understanding #broadband What is Broadband? A brief and informative breakdown of broadband and the benefits.

5. If you only read one blog post today make it this one RT @theREALwikiman: The Echo Chamber Live #echolib I have been following Ned’s thoughts on the Echo Chamber since he first began blogging and tweeting about it (#echolib) and I’ve really taken it to heart. I have made a concerted effort to connect with non-library related folk on Twitter and read blogs by people outside of libraryland. Lately I’ve noticed more and more librarians discussing the echo chamber and looking to get outside of their bubble.  You should also check out this post Escaping the Echo Chamber – presentation

6. HOW TO: Build Your Personal Brand on LinkedIn I think this is more for me than everyone else. I’m on Linkedin, my profile is complete, I have connections, heck I even have recommendations, but I still feel like I’m not using it to its full potential.

7. AWESOME! RT @theREALwikiman: Sweet LORD, I shouldn’t be as excited by this icon-finder site as I am via @PhilBradley I have to agree with Ned, the site is awesome and my excitement might be a little over the top. Really check it out.

8. Staff Development on a Budget My post over at ALA Learning, I share some great, FREE resources for staff development.

9. Writer, technologist, futurist (and father) Cory Doctorow shares his own concerns about child safety and the Internet - Doctorow shares how he incorporates a computer screen into time with his daughter, a must read.

10. read it. then read it again. even if you aren’t “famous” How to be “famous” (wink wink, nudge nudge) I came across this old post by Karen Schneider through the magic of Twitter and the Internet last week. There is some really good advice in there.  Everyone should read this, thanks to the Internet everyone will be famous to 15 people.

Mobile phones and the digital divide part 2

evoJason Griffey and I are having a discussion via our blogs regarding mobile phones and the digital divide to catch up first read my original post Why Mobile Phone Are Not the Key to the Digital Divide then read Jason’s response Why mobile phones are one key to the digital divide. This is my response to his post.

Jason states:

I believe strongly that the idea that a desktop is somehow superior to a mobile phone for Internet access is an accident of the time in which we live and the historical nature of the rise of computing. One can easily imagine that 10 years from now the then-digital-natives will look aghast at the desktops of the past. “What do you mean, you had to sit at a desk to use a computer? You pushed actual buttons?

I agree with this or at least don’t doubt the likelihood of it.  Except for one part, there are no digital natives. At least not in the sweeping generational assignments we technophiles want to apply.  You can not say all Millennials are digital natives, or that the generation after them will be, until we close the digital divide. There are too many children without exposure to the technology they would need to be considered digital natives. *

According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), more than 100 million Americans don’t have broadband at home because they either can’t get it, can’t afford it, or aren’t aware of its benefits. Some 65 percent of U.S. households have broadband, a far lower adoption rate than in other technologically advanced countries such as Singapore (88 percent) or South Korea (95 percent). – PC World February 2010

The National Broadband Plan from the FCC looks to address the issues created by the digital divide today, not in 10 years.  So when Aaron Smith states he thinks mobile phones play a key role he means now, in 2010, not 2020. That is my complaint. In 10 years this may be perfectly true.

Jason points out there are some who prefer mobile access:

There are examples, even today, of people who prefer mobile access to the Internet to using a desktop: the entire country of Japan, for instance. Many of them could easily afford desktops, but overwhelmingly they choose mobile phones as the mechanism they use for accessing the Internet.

Again he is correct. However this isn’t about choice, it is about assigning a substandard option for a class of people. We are moving toward better mobile, but in the mean time we can not apply a separate but equal philosophy to the ways in which individuals access the internet.

So unless there are some actual things that can be pointed out as to why Mobile access is second-class (and I swear, if someone says Flash, I quit)….I’m calling this cultural and historic bias.

Ok so it sounds like if I can convince Jason mobile access is not as good as a PC I might start to sway him.

For smartphones to replace PCs, they would have to take on all the features of a PC — they’d need to input and edit text as easily as a PC, create spreadsheets as easily as a PC, edit pictures and presentations as easily as a PC, and manage large databases as easily as a PC. To do that in a small mobile device, you need a color folding screen (so you can work with large documents), either a full-size keyboard or perfect voice recognition, a pointing device a heck of a lot more sophisticated than a five-way rocker, enormous amounts of storage, and a fast processor. Michael Mace CEO of Cera Technology

PC World magazine looks at Laptop vs. Netbook vs. Smartphone and asks Work, school, and play: Which portable computer is the do-everything device for you? A smart phone was not their first recommendation in any of the categories.

Here is a list of the things I attempted last night from my Smartphone, HTC Evo from Sprint. I’m sure there is a much longer list but I was tired, and my battery died :-)

print – Government agencies are no longer issuing print forms.inspect page source code – How do you think I learned most of what I know about html?change my Facebook privacy settings – we all know why this is importantcreate a Facebook page for my new small business, manage the FB page I already haveedit the videos I recorded before uploading them to YouTubeplay World of Warcraftapply for a jobspell check my comments on blogs before posting, so I don’t look any more foolish than I already do. On my PC this is something Chrome automatically does for me (thank goodness)

I was able to do somethings like check my bank account or access Google docs but good grief was it slow and if you’ve ever seen me text you know I can hold my own with most 14-year-old girls.

The screen size and lack of a real keyboard are still huge issues for me. Can you imagine trying to write a paper on one of these? In an age when being a citizen in a democratic society means participation and creation smartphones are still primarily a tool for consumption.

Battery life my netbook gets something like 10 hours and its over a year old. My phone doesn’t last the day with heavy use.

My mom lost her Blackberry last week. Who knows where, somewhere at home she thinks but its gone, as is everything on it. I know your PC could be stolen (or lost I guess) but the odds are slimmer. Even if your computer crashed you still have the hardware to rebuild upon.

* Can I just add on a personal note that I hope whatever we’re doing in 10 years is more comfortable than sitting at a keyboard all day because my back is killing me.

In this article we will discuss some related tasks must master to choose a title, some of the promotion work will do. It looks like an endless task, but it can control the same way we all master Anything…one step at a time.

You have probably heard some thoughts about what you're going to write.Your eBook title is the first thing your potential customers will see it has to get your attention, make subtitles and, then, read some more.

Picking your title is a very important step;one, that really the success of your project beiträgt.Jedes time when someone sees your titles on affiliate sites to certain forums relevant to your topic or in your e-Mail signature, it is actually an ad for your eBook.

Choosing a catchy, interesting called is another creation with a few guidelines that if followed, will focus in the right direction.

The first point to remember is to make your title as accurate as you can and lead it to a narrowly defined target market.Capture specific titles and keep your customers attention long enough to read the next line of your sales page.

If you have not already done so, who decide your customers his werden.Wer will buy your book? If you don't know it, you find, you will not find your customers and you.

With a keyword tracking tool can tell you how many people are looking for information on your topic. You choose the keywords that are specific to your theme, enter to see them and the results. Two helpful resources are Wordtracker and Google AdWords: keyword tool.Check them out.

If your theme is "Square Dancing", for example, you would select three or four words that relate directly to your Topic…words, could be used by anyone looking for information on "Square Dancing" into a search engine. Input "Square Dancing" in Google returned 170,000 related websites.

The final aspect of the title creation is considering whether or not you need a subtitle.May be short and specifically focused key during your eBook title, to attract attention, a subtitle answered the question, "What is all about this ebook?" or "Why do I need to read this?"

NEVER forget that really mean these two questions: "Why should I buy this?"Answer it with your subtitles, delivering the benefits for readers within your eBook.

Here is the emotional issue that is behind all decisions to buy something: "What's in it for me?"Answer, that in your focused title and use rich subtitle, and you will make sales via your faith.Think about it.How many things not buy it, or you want when you need it?

Here is to keep something in mind:

Once have a sales page for your eBook, that your signature on the bottom of each e-Mail add eighth, even to family and friends phone. This signature should include the title of your eBook (via a link with the sales page) and a few words pushing your reader's curiosity keys.

For example, if your title "35 fun things to do with A radish" is, your signature line might read "What you do with radishes?"…(Your eBook titles with links) .these signature would catch the attention of the reader puzzle him some and clicking on your sales page to find out, to get.

Most e-Mail programs offer the opportunity to add a signature to the email you senden.Es is all dead space at the end of your e-Mail; wasting it.

Needless to say, sounds UK media groups cautionary make deserves rewards on creator werden.Publishers Association chief exec said Richard Mollet:

"Publishers Association works closely with the Office for intellectual property during these six months verification to ensure that rightholders interests are not considered as an obstacle to the creation of Internet-based business models, as some believe, but as the foundation of UK substrate sizes creative, cultural and educational publishing industries."

Trying new coffee shops I spend a lot of time reading, some of it related to libraries or work or transiteracy or the digital exist divide so I've been thinking about a way to share it then I realized, hey! This is a blog by a librarian shouldn't I be required to post what I'm reading here? This weekend I asked on Twitter and Facebook if there was any interest in what I'm reading. The answer was yes.So here it is!

Once a month I'm going to write a what I'm reading post. It will include books, reports, publications, manifestos any other number of official things, it wont include blog posts or articles found online, I already share those via Twitter and this blog.

I live in the future and here's how it works: why your world, work, and brain are being Creatively disrupted -I discovered this via Twitter from Jenny Levine. So far, two of my favorite quotes:

It wasn't about print vs. digital. It was about immediacy, details, links, interactive graphics, videos, and most important, hyperpersonalization.

Paper is still number one for reading gadget content; It's disposable, relatively inexpensive and relatively simple to create in small or large quantities and it doesn't need batteries or a power outlet.

Ask for it: How women can use negotiation to get what they really want -two things I'm thinking about right now:

Keep in mind that what you really want may not be about more more responsibility, more money, more status. Changing your life for the better isn't always about being on the fast track or moving higher up the corporate ladder, sometimes it's about slowing down or moving sideways. So forget about the typical pathways to success in your profession.Take a fresh look at every aspect of your life and figure out what suits you. Consider hiring a personal coach to help you zero in on what would make you happier or help you strike the right balance among your many interests, goals, and commitments.

I wish I could hirer a personal life coach, but mostly I'm thinking that being successful at something doesn't mean I have to keep doing it I can say ok, did that and move on to something new.

WHAT WILL YOU RAIN SONG?Researchers have found that people experience two different kinds of regret: regret about things they've done and regret about the things they didn't do overwhelmingly, people regret the things they didn't do far more. When asked to identify the biggest regret in their life, people are two to three times more likely to describe something they didn't do instead of something they did.

Don't of think I need to elaborate on this one.

There's to app for that! Libraries and mobile technology: An introduction to public policy considerations (pdf) from the Office for information technology policy

As the information revolution continues to unfold, libraries will experiment with mobile devices and services to support the information needs of their users wherever they may be. The adoption of mobile technology age the traditional relationships between libraries and their users and introduces novel challenges to reader privacy. At the same time, the proliferation of mobile devices and services raises issues of access to information in the digital age, including content ownership and licensing, digital rights management and accessibility. This policy brief explores some of these issues and is intended to stimulate further community discussion and policy analysis.

Universal broadband: targeting investments to deliver broadband services to all Americans (pdf)A project of the Aspen Institute communications and society program and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Eighty percent of the households with incomes of less than $20,000 subscribe to premium television services whose monthly fees are comparable to and often exceed, the cost of broadband. This might surprise some who view broadband as more essential than premium television, but it should come as no surprise for a variety of reasons.

First, while television brings value to the individual, broadband's value depends to a significant degree on how many people in one's social circle are so using it and how they are using it second necessary to find there is a large gap between the tools and locate trustworthy, substantive content; how to safely interact online, and how to protect personal information. Moreover, using the Internet requires its users to be literate.Fourteen percent of the adult population in the United States, or 30 million people, read at below basic literacy levels, while another 63 million read at just the basic level.Literacy levels do not interfere with television usage, but without sufficient content geared towards those with lower reading levels, the utility of the Internet for those Americans drops dramatically. In short, there is no digital literacy without basic literacy.

To begin to address this gap, the Commission’s order will make it easier for schools and libraries to get the highest speeds for the lowest prices by increasing their options for broadband providers. The key provisions in the order include:

Allowing participants to use E-rate funds to connect to the Internet in the most cost-effective way possible, including via unused fiber optic lines already in place across the country and through existing state, regional and local networks;Making permanent a waiver that allows schools to create “School Spots” by opening up their doors to greater community use of E-rate supported services and facilities. Schools are already taking advantage of the existing waiver allowing them the option to provide Internet access to the local community after regular school hours. We’d love to hear your community use “success story” so please let us know if you are opening your doors as well.Launching a pilot program to support off-campus wireless Internet connectivity for portable learning devices;Indexing the cap on E-rate funding to inflation so that the program can more fully meet the needs of students and communities;Allowing the program to support connections to the dormitories of schools that serve students facing unique challenges, such as Tribal schools or schools for children with physical, cognitive, or behavioral disabilities;Bolstering protections against waste, fraud, and abuse by codifying competitive bidding requirements and clarifying restrictions on gifts from potential service providers; andStreamlining the E-rate application process.
