Why I'm a library traitor and love the Kindle, Sarah Houghton-Jan

Bless me, O Biblioblogosphere, for I have sinned.

I have betrayed the trust of my librarian people by gasp * loving my Kindle like I am told I would love a child if I had any interest in being a parent, which I don't.  But I do have digital content of interest in reading on a sleek, affordable and easy-to-use device.  Thus the Kindle.

In true geek fashion I recorded my Kindle unboxing (complete with space invader wall clings in the background).

Let me tell you why I so love my Kindle.  But before I cast like a schoolgirl in love with Edward Cullen, let me tell you that I feel guilty for loving it.  I boycott the Kindle as a librarian but love it as a consumer.

Stellar user interface design: The Kindle has a gorgeous form factor.  It's easy to hold in your hands – light, smooth and perfectly sized for my hands anyway.  The user interface is easy and intuitive, end of story.Smooth content delivery:The simplicity and speed of getting content is amazing.  I've been using the Kindle app on my Android phone for months now, and it literally takes you 5 seconds to buy and start reading a book from the Kindle Store. How long does it take to start reading a library eBook from the point you decide to download it? On the Kindle itself it's just as easy.Cross-device content delivery:Amazon what brilliant being the distributor for the device, the content itself, and the interface software used to access the content. But they were doubly brilliant in offering the content & interface on other devices through Kindle reading apps, so you can use your desktop, laptop, iPhone, iPad Android phone, etc. to access the Kindle universe of eBooks.  The Kindle device itself is secondary…they really covered their bases.Seamless syncing:Amazon's Whispersync technology syncs up your library and where you left off in your books without you having to do anything. Not having to think is good, yeah?  Steve Krug would be proud.Public domain title access:You can get free public domain titles onto your Kindle through free eBook sites like Project Gutenberg, all linked to with instructions from the Kindle website.

Now that we've covered the pros, here's why I detest the Kindle as a librarian:

No. access to library-owned eBooks (for shame): As you probably know, the Kindle is the onlyeReader devices that doesn't allow library digital content onto it.  The nook, Sony Reader, the sad little kobo, and even the iPad all allow library digital content.  Amazon would rather only sell you their stuff.  In the case of eBooks, Amazon does support not the standard EPUB format.  It only allows for content that is in one of its approved formats: their proprietary DRM format (.azw), plain text files (.txt), unprotected (read: no DRM) unprotected Mobipocket files (.mobi or .prc) (read: no DRM) PDF files (.pdf), and this odd and not-often-used Topaz format (.tpz). There are programs (like calibre) that can convert non-DRMed EPUB files into unprotected Mobipocket files so they can go on your Kindle.  And since there are scripts you can run to convert DRM-ed EPUB files into non-DRMed EPUB files, you can indeed get these books on your Kindle…but illegally unfortunately.  The fact that Amazon doesn't of allow library-owned eBooks onto its devices is a travesty.  It's wrong on every level.  But Amazon has no real motivation to open it up.  They make money from selling people books.  If people could get those same books on their kindles for free and without paying Amazon, just by logging in with a library card number, Amazon is going to lose some business.  And losing business for the sake of looking like you love libraries is sadly not a winning proposition in our society.  Here are some straight-forward instructions to help you get around the idiotic DRM rules and get library eBooks onto your Kindle.  This does clearly violate Kindle's terms of service, the library eBook vendor's terms of service, and even copyright law.  But you know what?  All you're doing is accessing on your eBook library owns and wants to check out to you on a device of your choosing.  Goddess forbid we can actually provide content that isn't device exclusionary!  So you know what?  Go for it. No. sharing or selling (err, legally): as with almost all consumer purchased eBooks, Amazon's Kindle eBooks forbid the transfer of the book to any other user or to a different device (non-Amazon).  This is a violation of the First Sale Doctrine which guarantees someone like to individual or a library to share the book once it's purchased, loan it out, or sell it.  None of us can do this with eBooks or other digital media like movies and music.  It's wrong and many people find ways around it because, frankly, the Kindle was not that hard to crack.

Perhaps someday I will make peace with the fact that the Kindle universe makes me happy.  Perhaps someday Amazon will allow digital content from libraries onto its devices, will accept industry standards and stop being an inbred walled garden of capitalist greed.  But I'm not holding my breath.

Kindle vs. iPhone: which one to read?

CNet has transferred a article from the Asian edition of his "crave" gadget blog blogger Damian Koh compares the reading experience from the Kindle 3 and iPhone 4. Koh says that he it "finds stressful" to read on an iPhone-sized display, and the Kindle screen draws more easier to read.

Of course, to demonstrate how the comments on CNET and original blog post reading comfort is often (literally) in the eyes of the beholder. As someone pointed out "the best e-reader that you with you to have."And an iPhone or iPod touch is much easier than to take a Kindle.(I wish I had one.)

This is hardly a new argument, but maybe the fact that it is popping up another sign as accepted e-book reading in the mainstream document.before the arrival of the e-ink reader were e-books generally those things, you on handheld PDAs read, and the only people who ever read those who got the PDAs for other things and then found e-books were a pleasant enough experience that size are the convenience for screen disadvantages.

But now it seems like it the other way to could go: people buy Kindle reading e-books may find that reading on smaller devices is comfortable enough with the availability of Kindle apps, the ability to enjoy anywhere makes for screen size disadvantages to books.

And, of course, thanks to the Kindle, the question does not necessarily either oder.Wenn is both a Kindle and an iPhone, then he may either on the same book you read in different situations.

Helpful tips for the new Kindle owner

Here are some practical tips from actual Kindle owner the newcomers, just in the last days. I cribbed most of this from this Amazon discussion forum thread, and although I I personally testify except those have edited, the whole thread is value a look if you are just started.

Shopping

Feel compelled to take each free book offer just because it's free. At the same time you hesitate to free offers, the interest, because a lot of offers are time sensitive.Pressing ALT + home brings you directly to the Kindle store on your device.Take the benefits of samples containing your impulse buys.Use - keeping eReaderIQ.com, keep an eye on expensive Kindle title, so you can be warned if the price drops. If you share your Kindle account with others, or if you want credit only for books, maintain a gift certificate setting up a second account on Amazon view, which is reserved exclusively for the Kindle to help.

The device

Troubleshooting

Download a backup copy of your Kindle user guide on your PC. (All guides are under http://www.amazon.com/kindledocuments.) It will be easier access to and can look up info even if reading about your Kindle before you. Also, you the user guide that is preinstalled on your Kindle. Seriously, it will make your life much easier and it is not dense or technical. If that you bought a new dark Amazon Kindle have covers and does your Kindle scary things (losing places in books, reboot, not maintaining a charge), contact Amazon about replacing the cover. This is a recently identified problem with some unlit covers, although it still formally confirmed from Amazon was not yet.

Finally, subscribe via RSS to this blog or other, how it for regular tips and news. It's an easy way where, is what is going to stay with the Kindle market.

For new and old Kindlers want more to do with your Kindle

CREATIVE USES OF THE KINDLE
Well, pleasurable reading is good enough for most, but there is a lot more that can be done with the Kindle, as shown in the short list just below.
(I recommend bookmarking this for quick access later.)

1. an old, continuing favorite forum thread about the more unique uses of the Kindle’s capabilitiesthought up by members of the Amazon Kindle Community, and I saw another idea added today.

NOTE: If your web browser (especially Firefox) drops you onto the Amazon forum list of topics instead of bringing you to the forum thread, click onRefresh or Reload to get the message thread itself — or click on the link again.  I don’t know why a ‘retry’ is often needed, but it is.

3. The Kindle Chronicles
This is a very informative, fun resource for Kindlers at http://bit.ly/tkchron, a weekly podcast hosted by Len Edgerly who, each Friday night, brings us a roundup of the latest news (with links), excellent tech tips, an interview with someone from the Kindle world at large and some from just outside it who are of course in the Kindle net then :-)  Len also presents video reviews as well.  At the site are summaries of what is included in the latest podcast report.  Links are given there for items mentioned in the podcast.

4. the new Kindle book by Stephen Windwalker, who has been explaining what can be done on Kindles since the Kindle 1, and this just-released book that includes info for the Latest Generation Kindles is only $0.99, which is more than a bargain.

STARTING GUIDE – BY AMAZON KINDLE SUPPORT TEAM – TOP10 FAQs
To START, though, Amazon has made a new ‘Announcement’ in the forums which introduces Kindlers to Kindle Top Ten FAQ’s, and oldtimers add to the thread, explaining some of it from their experience and helping some there who have specific problems starting out.

Here is a regular WEB version of Kindle Team’s TOP10 FAQs with active links (bracketed comments are mine).
I’ll keep a link to this post in the right-hand reference column of the web blog).

3 Eclipses Harry Potter at Amazon Kindle

Amazon has today its annual post Christmas press release published some of the trends that saw the company in holiday sales.  As Amazon can so many different products in as many geographical areas it sold some interesting stuff here.  This year Amazon sent over 9 million items to 178 countries.

First of all, says Amazon Kindle 3 is the previous best seller, eclipsing the best-selling product in Amazon's history, Harry Potter and the Deathly of Hallows (book 7).  Of course, Amazon shares no figures.  Bloomberg sources before recently reported, the it of projections was familiar with Amazon's sales said, 8 million Kindle probably sold Ereaders this year.

"We are grateful that the millions of customers who have made the best-selling product in the history of Amazon's new Kindle surpassed Harry Potter 7," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and CEO. "We see that many people who buy Kindle have a LCD tablet." Customers report with your LCD tablets for games, movies, and Web browsing and your Kindle for reading sessions. Reporting, dear Kindle for reading, because it less, weighs battery eliminated fear with his month-long battery life and has the advanced paper-like Pearl e ink display, which reduces eye strain, do not disturb sleep patterns before going to bed and read outside in direct sunlight, an important consideration for holiday work. Kindle's $139 price point is a key factor - it is low enough that people do not have to choose. "

When the iPad in life was called it widely was a "Kindle killer" labeled by the media.  Rather than kill the Kindle and other dedicated Ereaders, I think it is very likely that the iPad helped Kindle to stimulate sales.  Not only a vehicle for Kindle book sales, but it was iPad has introduced a lot of people, read digital.  The digital reading experience is much better on an e-ink screen as on an LCD display, and now that the Kindle much cheaper is (again, thanks to the iPad) many people choose to have both.

Some of the more interesting factoids from the Amazon press release:

On Christmas day more people new Kindle first turned on, buy more Kindle once, read everywhere apps downloaded and bought more Kindle books than any other day in the history. Ignite (Wi-Fi) and Kindle 3 g of the best-selling products were on Amazon.com of this holiday season. "The girl with the dragon tattoo" was the most purchased Kindle book on Christmas day. "The girl with the dragon tattoo" was the most gifted Kindle book on Christmas day. Amazon's top 500 most popular Kindle books, "The Dork Diaries" saw the biggest gain in popularity on Christmas day. While users of holiday season that largest mobile shopping days for iPad, iPhone and Android Sunday, however, was the largest mobile shopping day for BlackBerry was searching Friday. Customers, the Amazon bought enough snow/tyre chains, the entire population of the three cities of America's top ski outfit: Aspen, Breckenridge and Sun Valley. Amazon customers purchased for the holidays time alone enough copies of "Eclipse" for Edward Cullen film 1,000 times per day for all 109 years of his life. Amazon customers have so many pairs of jeans, when folded each pair and you above stacked on each other, the height of the equivalent of Mt. Everest would be bought. Amazon customers bought to hide enough Kyjen hide a squirrel a toy squirrel every day for the next 100 years. Amazon customers bought Shaver Philips she of this holiday season as the average Bart more hair on a man's face.

Picked this up from a Tweet by Stephen Windwalker.

Octovo Solis light for Kindle 3

Octovo still don't have your Kindle 3 covers ready  even though you told me you will be available before the end of the year - I hope that in time for Christmas delivery.  In the meantime, their Solis light has been redesigned to fit the latest generation Kindle 6 inch eReader.

The Octovo Solis light is created from a single block of brushed aluminium.  The lighting arm accommodates a single LED bulb and fold down for storage. The light is powered by a single AA battery (included), about 25 hours between battery offer changes sollte.Der mount is designed to prevent the light at 15 degrees glare angle.

The design is somewhat similar the Kandle eReader light compared to the gooseneck style of Mighty Bright lights.I like better than the Kandle the Solis from several Gründen.Erstens it uses AA batteries  during the button Kandle batteries used harder to find and expensive.  The Solis is made from metal instead of plastic.

Finally, although the description of Kandle says that it is for the latest generation Kindle 3, it was originally made with a wider bezel (1 & 2 Kindle, Sony PRS-300 & PRS-600) for Ereaders. The bracket of Kandle wider than facing the Kindle 3 and if not careful I would be easy to mistakenly think bracket not gut.Ich there on the screen of the Kindle 3 that would be one Kandle, but I use it on my 3 Kindle eReader, because I am afraid I could forget and do this.

The Solis light is available from Amazon or directly from OCTOVO icon for $29.99.OCTOVO Solis eReader makes light in a size of the Kindle 2 and the nook eBook reader.

German Kindle store coming?

Apparently there are some rumors, Amazon currently in negotiations with German publishers to open a German version of the Kindle store as part of Amazon.com.  Currently Germany customers can order the Amazon.com Kindle Ereaders, but if the rumors are true, this may change in 2011.  At the moment there are not many Kindle books in German language available, except for some public domain titles.

Negotiations have been difficult because - surprise - publishers, prices and would like to Amazon can set eBook prices.
