5 E book trends that will change the future of publishing

Philip Ruppel, President of McGraw-Hill Professional has an article titled above in Mashable today.

Its 5 trends are:

1. Improved eBooks come and will only get better;

(2) The device war is almost over;

(3) The $9.99 eBook will last forever.

Amazon popularized the $9.99 price point for best-selling titles trade, widespread consumer acceptance of the Kindle and consumption of e-books. This caused confusion among the many consumers who just think to each e-book $9.99 or less. But the majority of titles on Amazon are offered about $9.99, especially those with unique interactive features prices. Our e-books may be low, mass market pricing think some consumers to be applied to any e-book for professional and technical publishers like McGraw-Hill. Our costs are invested in extensive product and editorial development of sophisticated and technical content; the cost of paper, printing, and a fraction of the real cost are binding. And for some very specific and technical issues, our markets are much smaller. We could not afford simply not to publish the work where it needs to be daily low, low price of $9.99 price of.

The real possibility for publishers are e-books to develop the kind of interactive features to provide the above. Our customers will demand interactive books to offer much better, more informed and rewarding experience. The experience (the cost) is often the primary driver for you.

(4) The contextual upsell will be to see a business model.

5. Publishers are becoming increasingly important.

Smashwords 2011 predictions for book publishing

It is the annual divination time if people like me-stick from her neck and try to predict the future. I invite you to join in the fun. Refresh your crystal ball and share your publishing forecasts for 2011 in the comments field below.

Earlier on today, interviewed Jeff Rivera on the Media Bistro, for my ten publishing book at me forecasts for 2011.

I'll list five below, and then I encourage you to have Media Bistro, click 10 in his interview for the full publishing forecasts for 2011 Smashword s.

2010 Which went mainstream year of eBooks in the United States was when 2011 will be the year with indie eBook authors are mainstream go. We have already seen this start with some huge indie eBook author outbreaks occurred in 2010. A few weeks ago I wrote about Smashwords author Brian S. Pratt.

So, here are five predictions for 2011:

1. EBook sales increase, unit consumption surprises - eBooks sales are 20% of trade book revenue on a monthly basis until the 2011 u.s. approach nor the bigger surprise is that eBooks will account for a third or more of the unit consumption. Why? Read more about EBooks cost less and eBook "early adopters".

2. Agents write the next chapter of the eBook revolution - agents, serve the economic interests of the best-selling authors, bring new credibility to self publishing encouraging authors to circumvent publishers proactively and work directly with eBook distribution platforms. Agents will this publishing platforms for negotiations use against large publishers use. The conversation will go something like this: "you are my author offering just 15-20% list on eBooks if you list the 60-70 can I get % work directly with an eBook distributor like Smashwords or retailers such as Amazon?"

3. Reluctant to part with digital rights - more great authors indie eBook publishing offers compelling advantages to the author. The economics are better (see # 2) and the publishing cycle times are faster (an eBook manuscript today can upload and achieved worldwide distribution in minutes or days rather than years). EBooks offer larger publishing flexibility (shorts, full length, bundles, free books), and the opportunity to achieve lower costs (still higher profit) more readers with books. The benefits are attract more professional writers to some or all your future catalog and all your reset-rights catalog itself.

4. Self publishing is last resort option of first resort under unpublished authors - still seek the unpublished authors to achieve the credibility and blessing, comes with a professional book deal. Yet the cachet of the traditional publishing is fading fast. Authors with final manuscripts will grow, impatient and angry as you wait from major publishers otherwise drivel trailer has with the release of celebrity, Justin Bieber and the Kardashians discovered. Now is the break-out success of several indie stars author in 2011, forcing many unpublished authors from the sidelines headlines. How unpublished authors deal the pile of mud, publishers lose first dibs on future stars of tomorrow.

5. EBook prices to fall - it's all about supply and demand. Demand is surging, but supply is overwhelming demand. Average eBook prices fall to hold the line 5 publishers, despite the attempts by agency. The drop is powered by the abundance of books, plenty of low cost or free non-book content, influx of ultra price and sensitive readers that read first, fierce competition for readers and digitisation of rolled back rights and out-of-print books. Indie authors because you can earn retail price of 60-70% to the price compete points major publishers can not touch.

Read all ten of my predictions in the full interview over at Media Bistro, and please share your own predictions in the comments below.

Latest Facebook privacy violation - is now broadcasting talks by publishing the content of recent activity

There was a time when your "current activity" disable one of your Facebook account or privacy settings, in the news feed or on your wall appear allowed. This went away sometime last year (profile update 10102029309808098, I think). Facebook completely removes the option to hide your recent activities and you now saw was something like "Bobbi Newman to John Doe's wall wrote" instead, I and many other people were disturbed by this. I need not Facebook all informed my friends each time, when I speak one of you. Some people only with the feed, like me, work others learned that all these activities deleted if back to a computer get.

Last week Facebook launched its latest and greatest profile update rollout. At first I was only bothered with it. Why is my job, education, current city, hometown and long eye front and Center on my profile. Already know that my friends? It felt really like an another push of Facebook to be The One Site. It bothered me because I know many new people Facebook every day, people use who do not understand Facebook's privacy settings, the agenda and the policies.  They are not looking to present their work you are looking to connect with friends and family, and Facebook is pushing them to use the website professionally. We will most likely not end well. know something

This evening I noticed something new instead of saying "Bobbi Newman to John Doe's wall wrote" it actually tells you exactly what I wrote. Even if you not friends with John Doe. Even if their account is private.

I know there are people who say be if you don't want that it did not see it post. Whatever. You are missing the point. The point is-, the while have this conversation in a semi-public ball there can no indication that I wanted this conversation aired is taken place. (I could argue that if my friends page is private and locked, this was a private conversation, but let's just call it quasi-private because it happened on Facebook)

We seem to be in the same problem with Facebook's privacy settings do over and over. There is a huge difference in something publicly available, and it is published.

Think of it this way, you and I in a coffee shop, sitting after talking at a table. This is a public place, so that our conversation in a public place is happening, but it's only us and quiet conversation, so we are we have an assumption of the degree of privacy. Now the man next to us on his laptop with his headphones on could be heard but chances are, it is not. During this conversation public it is not just broadcast or recorded.

Now imagine, we sit in the same coffee shop in the same scenario and not only monitored the guy at the table next to us, but he is our conversation record and send it to people in the coffee shop and people on the street.

The first scenario accurately reflects how people Facebook deal talks, we know we are in the public but we assume (true or false), that no one listen to or record. What is easy to do because so much outside the page within a few days and you forget it ever happened despite past experience on Facebook.  What makes Facebook in this latest update is the future scenario.

Worse still, they are given no choice. I know it has much controversy of some changing Facebook's privacy in the past few years, but in most cases you could modify your preferences to change these problems. In this case you cannot. Facebook is broadcasting all your conversations.

What really kills me is I was looking for stories on this problem and I can't find any. Nobody seems to care. Maybe we are so used to the injured from Facebook, we once again not notice.

J.a. Konrath tells ' sleeping cat history ' be self publishing success

Joe Konrath has posted about his success with self publishing Amazon again. (We have already covered a number of such posts by him.) This time he couches that it as a "bedtime story", which kinda cutesy but it over the point.

Soon Joe was over $1000 per month make Kindle.

Joe was shocked by this. He thought was the only way to make a living as a writer with the gatekeeper. The gatekeeper progress offered. Gatekeeper action editing and cover art. And most importantly, the gatekeeper controlled distribution. There was no way to reach readers without the gatekeeper.

But eBooks needed not to print books were in the same way distributed. So the gatekeeper was required.

It is great that Konrath is so much success with his Amazon self publishing. My only problem with this blog posts is that you all repeat starting to say the same things over and over again, as if he just has different phrasing, the story for the search engines so often to update all.

But then I think this kind of even advertising is what earned him $22,000 in December, so it isn't as if I can blame him for the sequel, it to spread.

Notes from a family reunion: iPad, vanity publishing

I attended my grandmother’s 95th-birthday-party-cum-family-reunion over the weekend, and took the iPad with me. Consequently, I spent a lot of time demonstrating it to family members and friends, and explaining its features to the curious.

Just about everybody who saw me with the device wondered about it, and I would spend anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes demonstrating it. I have to admit, Steve Jobs is a marketing genius
